£175m Technical Excellence Colleges create new market for digital skills platforms
New network of specialist colleges will train young people in technology, advanced manufacturing and clean energy, as ministers warn of a 600,000-worker skills gap by 2030.

The government has designated 19 further education colleges as Technical Excellence Colleges, backed by £175 million in funding, in what ministers describe as a significant step towards closing the gap between the skills employers need and the qualifications young people are acquiring. The new colleges, spread from Durham to Plymouth, began delivery in April 2026. They will specialise in areas including digital technologies, advanced manufacturing, clean energy and defence, with each site selected to align with local industry demand and contribute to regional economic growth.
